In all honesty I’m generally not really a fan of horse racing but today’s Melbourne cup race was a winner on many counts. Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the race since the first race in 1861 and and only the fourth female jockey to ride in the Cup. I loved how she just said what she thought at the end of the race “I want to say to everyone else, get stuffed, because women can do anything and we can beat the world." She also described her sport as chauvinistic which is telling it like it is but she also thanked those who had got her this far! A true champion!
Her brother, Stevie, is the strapper and also happens to have Down’s syndrome. A family united in work and also now in victory. I saw a great comment from Ruth Webber the CEO of Downs Syndrome Australia on another blog and she said …”riding for a stable that values all its employees and practises inclusive employment – now that’s winning!”
Cheers to them and may all employers consider how diversity in the workplace brings benefits to everyone.
